This is a very subtle film that explores human connections through nature. There’s no real traditional plot structure, as it is more of a meditation than anything. It has a doc-like feeling to it. There’s a beautiful tone to it, but I can’t say it pulled me in. A second viewing might.
Master Gardener

I waited a long time to watch this one, against plan to do so since it came out. I was reminded of Schrader’s ability to make something that seems to blur the lines between a b-movie and a Hollywood or mainstream one. This b-movie affect is probably more evident in The Canyons than in anything else I’ve seen that he’s directed. In correlation with this, is his ability to contruct the transcendent. This was mostly evident in the “sex scene”, which also reminded me of the floating “love scene” in First Reformed. Refreshing to see work like this.
